A gas pipeline was dent caused by mechanical impact deformed plastically beyond repair. In order to know the actual integrity condition, fitness for services (FFS) analysis has been conducted. Based on field inspection the geometry and size of the damage pipe section has been quantified and fed to model the actual defect. A FFS level 3 assessment using finite element analysis (FEA) was performed.
From stress analysis it was found that pipeline can still be operated safely with 75% operation pressure level (i.e. down rated), and it is also recommended that the partial replacement should be employed within 3 year period. Meanwhile, to reinforce the pipeline and back to 100% original operational pressure, composite repair is recommended.
